Tax Information

If you purchase a home in Florida, you will be required to pay ad valorem or "property" tax based on the taxable value of the property. Ad valorem taxes are assessed by the county property appraiser and collected annually by the county tax collector's office.

A $25,000 homestead exemption and cap on assessed value is available to homeowners who meet certain requirements. Certain exemptions are also available to blind persons and other physically challenged residents. Call your county property appraiser for details.

On January 29th, 2008, Floridians will hve the chance to approve a new tax cut which will provide the following relief:

      1. Make Save Our Homes portable. Owners can use the benefit, up to $500,000, when they buy a new home. People who moved in 2007 could get the benefit retroactively.

      2. Double the $25,000 homestead exemption.

      3. Cap annual nonhomestead property assessments at 10 percent. It does not apply to school taxes.

      4. Exempt $25,000 in tangible personal property.

There is also a new tax cut trying to get put on the ballot for November 2008.  In order to do so, they need to clooect 600,000+ petitions.  The 1.35% PROPERTY TAX CAP AMENDMENT caps all property taxes at 1.35% of taxable value while preserving SAVE OUR HOMES and all HOMESTEAD EXEMPTIONS. This plan cuts property taxes by $8 billion and reduces property tax collections by 26% statewide.  Click on the above link to find out more and sign the petition.
